TRAVEL REVIEW:
SEPTEMBER 2002
by: Michael & Milan / Editors

  About LA’s Gay Community:

In Chicago we have the Halsted Street, In LA it’s the Santa Monica Blvd. While we were in LA we noticed how Chicago and LA had a different style from the fashion to the bar scene and yes, the guys too. Santa Monica is the gay mecca of West Hollywood. The Bars and clubs, cafés, cruising scene and resorts are all within walking distance on the Santa Monica St., just as we have the Halsted Street. Except the rainbow flags, West Hollywood doesn’t have any symbolism of the gay community as we have the Pylons on Halsted St.

Where to Stay?

We wanted to stay in the middle of the action of West Hollywood and selected San Vicente Inn Resort which was within walking distance to the clubs and bars just as staying in Boystown.

San Vicente Inn Resort:

If you want to be yourself and have fun then San Vicente would be the ideal place to stay. It’s a clothing optional gay resort with the feel of tropical oasis and pastel bungalows. Friendly staff and has mixed clientele from young, old to muscle boys. You can enjoy your time in the pool, sauna, or the steam room. During our stay they had the Bodybuilder Pool Party and the 2003 Calendar Photo Shoot. It was a fun party, lot of hunk guys in their skimpy swimwear and some in none.

Nightlife:

The nightlife scene in West Hollywood is vibrant with lot of clubs in the same area. In LA, the party starts early and it ends early too. We were expecting LA to be a party town and able to dance all night just as we could do in Chicago on weekends but at 2am all the bars and clubs have to close. If you are 18, you would love LA because majority of the clubs are open to 18+.

Herelounge.com

HERE is very popular among the locals and usually have long lines after 11pm on weekends. We visited the Here Lounge on Sunday for the SIZE event by Tom Whitman. We personally met Tom Whitman, he is a great organizer and promoter for various events in WeHo club scene. HERE has a Comfortable seating, laid-back lounge with full juice bar, patio and dance floor. The crowd is predominantly young and nearly 20% were lesbian. No cover but depends on the event.

ABBEY

Abbeyfoodandbar.com

Abbey is adjacent to HERE Lounge and it has multi-rooms. It has a feel of Roscoes but with large size rooms. It’s a bar with outdoor restaurant and patio. Abbey is what you cannot find in Chicago, a club where you can eat, drink, dance and have a good time. The DJ from Brazil was outstanding, and we had a great time on the dance floor. The intimate cabana and fireplace in the back room with large mirrors and soft sofas personifies classy ambiance and romantic feel. Young gay and lesbian crowd all have fun together. No cover but depends on the event. Expect long lines.
